A Rainy Day

san-ramon-turnoff_0649

Wednesday October 19, 2016

I awoke to cloudy skies and a longing to go photographing. It is the rainy season here in Nicaragua. It has rained every afternoon. I now live in Matagalpa, Nicaragua surrounded by mountains I spent the morning cleaning house and shopping for groceries. I continually observed the sky for signs of rain. The clouds were a light grey. I looked to the North. The mountains were covered with mist. Now this was promising. A chance to capture some moody scenes. I downed a quick lunch. Loaded my camera gear into my day pack. Then out the door I went.

I hailed a passing taxi. Next stop was the bus station. I exited the taxi after paying my fare. There was a bus loading passengers to San Ramon. I climbed aboard heading to the San Ramon turnoff. As I exited the bus at the turnoff, the sky was becoming darker. I quickly walked down a side road to set up my tripod and camera.  There were some interesting compositions as you can see above. I placed part of a small knoll along with a portion of a tree branch in the foreground. I found the tree branch interesting due to its angle, but the lighting on the leaves was the highlight. By doing this I achieved a greater depth to the photo. The camera settings for the photo was 0.5 secs, f22. Drops of rain appeared as I was photographing.

The rain picked up a bit as I walked a fence line. I was able to capture a few more shots. The rain was coming down harder by now. I packed up and headed to some buildings at the turnoff. I waited and waited but there was no let up with the rain. I waited about forty five minutes. The day was getting darker. This meant lower shutter speeds. There was a bit of wind. Time to go home and make supper.

Well that is it for now. Until next time happy trails

Mist On The Montreal River

MontrealRiver_4647

The following morning after my evening photographing, I returned to the Montreal River. This time it was at dawn. The river was thick with mist. The morning temperature at my campsite in Sawpit Bay, Lake Superior was 12 Celsius. On my arrival at the Montreal River the temperature was 5 Celsius. The distance between the two locations was only 40 Kilometers. I set up at the same location from the previous evening. It was a matter of waiting for the right lighting. Waiting for the fog to lift was a factor. The fog helped eliminate all that blue sky with no clouds. It was a nice setup watching the morning evolve. The crispness of the morning air felt good. It was a fall feeling.

The temperatures are beginning to drop here. Maybe the colors of fall will come on. Fall is the time of year when the air is cool and crisp. The beauty of the land is before you in a spectrum of color.

Martha Lake,Algoma

There is a chill

In the early morning air

Mosquitoes and black flies

Scourges of the north country

Lying dormant for now

A mist is rolling

Off the greening forest

Covering the placid waters

Of a small lake

The forest deep in shadow

With a hint of mystery

The cover of darkness

Casting its mirror image

Over the lake surface

It is early June

A time of renewal

Through out the north

The birch and poplar

Luminous in new coats

Of green leave cover

Flowering shrubs are scattered

Among the refreshing forest

Spring wildflowers dot the landscape

The dawning of the day

Is now approaching

The sky becoming enlightened

The sun is peeking

Over the emerging woods

To shed golden light

Among the surrounding trees

Enticed by a mayfly hatch

A rising brook trout

Dimples the lake surface

Leaving a telltale ring

As the morning wears on

The sun cresting the horizon

The air is warming

The mist is retreating

Revealing emerald green waters

Of a pristine lake

The mosquitoes are emerging

To bite exposed skin

Of its unprotected victim

El Chile, A Poem

_MG_9904

Off in the distant

The mountains stand tall

In the converging mist

The morning air cool

The sun not yet appeared

Dark shadows cover the highlands

It is the season to be dry

The Rio Trentino meanders

Through the lower valley

Arching boughs over the water

Of a near dry river bed

Mist rises from the river

To mingle with the smoke

Of the breakfast fires

From the brick and mud chozas

The sky becomes enlightened

The mountains and highlands

Ghostly in the moving mist

Open fields cover the hillsides

In shades of green and brown

Ganado appear on the exposed hills

Flights of Garza wing overhead

Gleaming snow white in the mist

To land among the Ganado

Feeding on stirred up insects

As the Ganado graze

The air is alive

With flights of parrots

Flocking to the soybean fields

For their morning feed

The air is warming

The sun rays filtering

Through the shadowy mist

To enlighten the highlands

With bands of light

Black Vultures take to the skies

To catch the air thermos

Warming in the morning air

Gliding high above the land

Searching for carrion

The throaty haunting cries

Of the Congo monkeys

Echoes upon the mountains

As they feed upon fruit and leaves

High in the tree branches

Along the Rio Trentino River

The mist is thinning

A sun lit El Chile emerges

From the swirling mist

Regal and graceful behind

The rolling sunlit hills

Billowing white clouds appear

A golden glow enshrines

The rugged mountain scene

A momentary spectacle

That is soon lost

The wind is increasing

Blowing from the north

A haze now appears

With the mist frittering away

Leaving a hazy scene

As the morning advances

Sitting on a Moss Covered Rock

Superior_2064

Sitting on a moss covered rock

Surrounded by Black Spruce

Squashing a skeet now and then

The pesky critters would dive-bomb

To sting the back of my neck

A well beaten moose trail

Traverses the swamp edge

A scene of stillness

The open water quiet and benign

The ghostly dance of mist

Transforms the summer morning

The sun not yet risen

A channel leads one’s eye

To the far hills

The Black Spruce dark and ominous

At the shore’s edge

Protruding rocks break the shoreline

A cliff rises in the channel

The sun’s rays slowly creep

Over the shadowed land

Light filters through the mist

The far hills unfold

In the morning light

Fingers of light creep

Through the dark shadows

The mist is still swirling

A pair of Loons appear

Dark shapes in the mist

The warmth of the morning sunlight

Chasing the night shadows before it

The mist now dissipating

Exposing the Boreal Forest

Rising from my moss covered  rock

I quietly trudged  up the hill

With one last look

As I crested the hill

Another memory to preserve

Wolf Lake Part 2

WolfLake_1491

Having explored the campsite it was time to haul our gear into the campsite. Once the camp gear was in place it was time to sit back, relax and enjoy the grand view. A nice breeze was blowing off the lake. It being lunch time we proceeded to eat lunch. This was when I discovered that I had misplaced the tea and coffee. Tim’s Dad had been an ardent  woodsman and he taught Tim a lot about  the outdoors. One of the things was making tea from plant leaves. In this case he gathered up a bunch of blueberry leaves to put in with the boiling water plus raisins. It was not bad. Experiment and learn.

After stretching out in the tent for a half hour, we were soon on the lake exploring. Wolf lake is not a large lake. As we followed the shoreline enjoying the lake features I noticed that there was remains of trees that had burnt during previous forest fires. All the campsites had been taken. There are apparently four or five campsites on this lake. Approaching the outlet into Sylvester Lake we observed a large party at a campsite. Shooting through a narrow spot between the two lakes, the canoe glided onto Sylvester Lake. Looking around us, it was soon discovered that this lake had nothing to offer for photographing. Paddling back into Wolf Lake we followed the West shoreline to the upper end of Wolf Lake. Turning the canoe back to the campsite, returning in time for supper.

With our meal out of the way it was a matter of waiting for evening to descend upon us. As we sat in our chairs, Tim spotted a Loon across the lake with its one young chick.

I explored the shoreline near camp. There appears to be a very healthy population of Smallmouth Bass in this lake. The lake looks very healthy. There are an abundance of crayfish among the rocks. Crayfish are a favorite of the Smallmouth Bass. We managed to get some photographing that evening. Evening soon turned to darkness. Tim had a good fire going. The mosquitoes appeared. We spent a wonderful evening sitting by the fire under a canopy of stars. The moon was shining as a quarter moon.

When we woke up the next morning the lake was still with mist. I captured the above scene by using the boulders as my foreground and to direct your eye through the V. It helped to eliminate a lot of water from the scene. You can see a small ridge in the background along with what I believe is Wolf Mountain.

I will be posting more work of this trip in the future. I am heading up North of Sault Ste Marie to Lake Superior for a weeks photographing. So until next time happy trails.

Little Tree, Little Island

BirchIsland_2222

4:30 a.m. comes early. Hauled my self out of bed. Loaded the gear into my Ford Escape. Stopped in Lively to pick up a Tim Horton’s coffee and some breakfast. Next stop was for gas. Then it was off for my morning shot. I arrived on location at 6:00 am with an hour to spare. Sunrise about 7:10 a.m. The temperature was hovering around 0 C. There was mist on the lake but it was still too dark. Lesson learned. Stay in bed an extra hour.

But the end result was the above photo about an hour and a half later. A little tree on a little island. Beautiful golden morning light saturating the mist. I kept this photo tight so as not to distract from the subject. By shooting vertical I was able to do that.

Well that is it for now. Thank you for stopping by. Until next time happy trails.

Morning On The French

FrenchRiver_3046

A beautiful late summer morning on the French River, French River Provincial Park. As you can see in the composition above the early morning light is illuminating the scene on the left. The rocks on the far shore are now highlighted by the morning light. A touch of mist to add to the mood. You will notice that there are rocks in shadow where the sun has yet to appear.

Our snowstorm is over and looking forward to warmer weather now. Well that is it for now. Until next time happy trails

Pinkish Mist

VermillionRiver3739

Daybreak on the Vermillion River. The mist was rolling down the river at a good pace. There is a rocky point of land on the West side of the river. Loading up my camera gear I made my way over to the rocky point. The rock structure here is rather unique in that it has good detail and many rock faces. The neat thing was the sun was creating a pinkish glow in the mist. I set up my tripod and Canon EOS 7D to compose a photo. The biggest problem I had here was with the mist. I had to wait a bit before I could see the rocky point. The greenery gives a break in the scene along with the little Maple in its Fall glory.

Well that is it for this week. We are in the middle of a pretty good cold snap here in Sudbury Ontario. So, until next time happy trails.

Mist and The Maple Tree

VermillionRiver3732

It was just after sunrise on the Vermillion River near my home. It was one of my many trips to the river to photograph. It was Fall and the colors were very nice. The mist was heavy that morning. I saw a maple tree across the river being lit up by the early morning sun. I proceeded to set up my tripod and Canon 7D. It was just a matter of waiting for the mist to thin out a bit. I managed to capture the above composition of the Maple Tree in all its Fall glory.

Well that is it for this week. Thank you for stopping by and for the comments. Until next week happy trails.
