Mica Bay, Lake Superior
Mica Bay, Lake Superior. This was one of my enjoyable evenings spent exploring the shoreline of Mica Bay, Lake Superior.
The evening was becoming late as I observed this scene. The lake was rolling gently. The exposure would be long. That would create a dreamy affect on the water. More so in the foreground. I cast around for a suitable collection of rocks at the water’s edge. The composition soon came together in my mind. I set my tripod as low as I could set it. Therefore, allowing me to create an illusion of less water. To tighten the composition I shot vertically. Too much water would spoil the effect of the composition.
I stretched out on the beach. Being eye level showed me my composition as I wanted it. Thus I was able to create my scene.

Black Spruce
There is a small lake in Superior Provincial Park alongside Highway 17. It is named Moose Lake. There is a clump of skeletal Black Spruce that caught my eye. I first saw this set up in 2013. We were always passing by at the wrong time. Bad lighting. This year Maureen and I spent 5 days at Superior Provincial Park in late August.
What attracts me to this scene. The Black Spruce. As the sun lowers in the sky, the grayish color of the dead Spruce becomes more intense. The grey color stands out in a sea of green. The channel leading back to these skeletal trees gives me a lead in. An added bonus is that the late evening sun was highlighting the hill in the background. This in turn created a golden reflection in the foreground. Now I did not want to show to much of this golden reflection. Therefore I kept it tight. Doing this allowed for more lead in to the Black Spruce. Showing too much of this colorful reflecting would lead to a distraction. For depth we have four layers here. The shoreline, Black Spruce, The evergreens behind and then the sunlit hill in back.
You may ask me if I knew that the hills would light up. The answer would be no. But I have also seen this many times . I had set my composition in the camera on the tripod. Taken a few shots. Then low and behold the hills lit up. I quickly started shooting and shortly the lighting was gone. Be there. That is all I can tell you. The Black Spruce always adds drama to your work. You can not miss them when they are in the dead form.

Autumn on The Vermillion
This is one of my favourite locations in the Fall to capture the Autumn colors. The Vermillion River just West of Sudbury, Ontario provides me with some very unique opportunities to photograph. I was driving home on Hwy 17 from Sudbury late one evening .I slowed down as the bridge over the Vermillion River came into view. Parking my Ford Explorer on the side of the highway I grabbed my camera and tripod and scrambled down the embankment to the river‘s edge. The river was as smooth as glass and there was a great deal of saturation in the colors. Across from me is a rock point that has always been photogenic over the years. There was enough color to be had, but not overpowering. I myself prefer scattered Fall colors that can work in a composition. With the evergreens and the white Birch trunks to add contrast I composed the above composition.

Little Maple
I have spent the last few mornings heading down to the local river before dawn.The Vermillion River flows South before joining up with the Spanish River.My photographic locations have been in and around the Highway 17 bypass.Each morning there has been a fair amount of mist.The shoreline is loaded with color at this time of year.A great opportunity to get some colorful compositions.
There was a small maple shrub growing on a rocky point.It was a brilliant red in color.I headed over to it to see what I could do with it.Well when I got there I noticed some color on the far shore.A larger maple that had not turned completely red. But there was some nice yellow to go along with the red.There was a small rock structure to break up the color,a little bit of mist to add an added touch.Just to cause some curiosity there was a beer can among the vegetation on a ledge.This adds a bit of the human element to the photo.People seem to have a passion to litter.I only showed a small portion of the rocky point in foreground to keep the composition tight for a better effect.
