The Reflective Side of Nature

In this photo a unique lighting has been created. You have the lighting from the late evening sun drenching the rocks  in the background. Thus creating an orange like hue on the rocks. The rocks in the foreground are now darker for the sun no longer affects them. But there is still a touch of lighting on the rocks to the left. This is what helps to add character to a composition. It is the little detail. There is a nice green tinge to the water in the foreground. This is due to the sun striking the evergreens on the far bank and reflecting on the water. If it had been a little earlier the water would be a golden color due to the stronger strength of the sunlight.

A Late Morning Composition

The above photo was taken last Fall at O S A Lake in Killarney Provincial Park.

It was late morning at our campsite. The La Cloche Mountains were ablaze in color.

Paul Smith and I were relaxing with our coffee after a dawn shot.

I happen to look across to the far shore. There is a small cove there.

A small group of evergreens grew here. The sunlight was highlighting these small trees.

I quickly set up my tripod and Canon 7D. My zoom lens is a Canon 28 to 135.

The resulting composition is quite pleasing with the color and lighting.

I will be at the Rubber Boot festival in Noelville this coming Saturday.

Rugged River

The Aux Sauble River has many rugged areas in its journey South. One such location is pictured here. This was taken in late summer and the water levels are very low. On the far shore is a cliff of granite rock. What is unique is the patterns that can be seen on the rock face. As I was setting up my tripod and Canon 7D, a beam of light lit up some trees in the background. Now this really adds character to the composition. It is early evening and the sun is low to the horizon. This allows for the beam of light to filter through the trees at a low angle to produce the lighting that you see here.

Color in The Sky

A beautiful Fall evening. The sun is below the horizon. I had looked to the North side of O S A Lake and saw the beautiful colored sky that you see above. I set up my tripod and Canon 7D and composed the above shot. Scenes like this are always wonderful to see. The colors in the sky are fleeting, so you have to be fairly quick about getting these shots.

Well that is it for now. It is a rainy day here in my part of the country. Plus freezing rain and snow.

Making Use of Rock Structures

A short half hour canoe ride brings you to a stretch of fast water that has some interesting photo opportunities. The location is the Aux Sauble River North of Massey Ontario. This scene was interesting in that on the West side of the river was an unique rock structure. The face of the rock was smooth and dished from constant wear by water over countless years. There is a nice overhang of Pine branches on the far shoreline. I set up my tripod and my Canon 7D to use the rock structure on the right as my lead in to the composition.

Color Along The River

Last Fall Paul Smith and I were wandering along the Wakanasin River. Paul and I had looked at this scene many times but could not put it together. We looked at it during many seasons other than Winter. Up the Westbranch there is not a lot of Maple and Oak for the red and orange Fall colors. There is mostly Evergreens, Birch and Poplar in this part of the country.

I stepped out in the water to set up this composition. Having placed the tripod and camera I set about composing the above scene. There was cloud cover, which cut the glare of the sun on the running water. You can just make out some reflection, reddish orange on the right in the crystal clear water.

Pinkish Mist

Daybreak on the Vermillion River. The mist was rolling down the river at a good pace. There is a rocky point of land on the West side of the river. Loading up my camera gear I made my way over to the rocky point. The rock structure here is rather unique in that it has good detail and many rock faces. The neat thing was the sun was creating a pinkish glow in the mist. I set up my tripod and Canon EOS 7D to compose a photo. The biggest problem I had here was with the mist. I had to wait a bit before I could see the rocky point. The greenery gives a break in the scene along with the little Maple in its Fall glory.

Mist and The Maple Tree

It was just after sunrise on the Vermillion River near my home. It was one of my many trips to the river to photograph. It was Fall and the colors were very nice. The mist was heavy that morning. I saw a maple tree across the river being lit up by the early morning sun. I proceeded to set up my tripod and Canon 7D. It was just a matter of waiting for the mist to thin out a bit. I managed to capture the above composition of the Maple Tree in all its Fall glory.

A Tight Composition

Last Fall I spent a couple of evenings looking for compositions of Birch Trees and Red Maple leaves. In previous posts you will come across the Birch and Maple theme. The Birch Trees have marvellous texture on their trunks. So this time I decided to find something that I could do up close. Strolling through a grove of Birch Trees I came across the above composition. I set up the Canon EOS 7D on the tripod for a vertical shot. There was a blackish piece on the white trunk where maybe at one time there had been a branch. It formed a V shape. Using this as a focal point and the red Maple leaves surrounding it, a composition was created.

The Nature of Light

This photo was taken on a small creek that runs out of Johnny  Lake in Killarney Provincial Park. My partner, Paul Smith and I were exploring along the creek. As we made our way through wooded growth to the shoreline , I suddenly noticed the strong glow of lighting on the grasses and trees. Now there was cloud cover moving overhead rather quickly. This meant the sunlight came and went. It was late afternoon so the angle of light was right. Moving quickly I set up my tripod and Canon 7D at the creeks edge. Due to the large amount of green and yellow I kept the reflections to a minimum. The dead wood broke up the mass of green on the right. There is shadow in the background and the creek takes a bend. It was a matter of waiting for the sun to pop out from behind the moving clouds. This photo shows you what the right lighting can do to your composition. Normally this would be just an ordinary shot.
