Bassfin Lake is located in the Sudbury area.
You travel the Matagamasi Lake Road .
This is an interesting lake to photograph for its colorful rock structures.
Every trip I made here I appeared to be the only person on the lake
The best photographing was in the evening in low light.
Then the colors became warm and beautiful
Launching the canoe onto Bassfin Lake on a warm sunny afternoon, Don Duprius and I glided over the rippled lake surface. We entered a world of quiet and beauty. We paddled lazily along heading for the North shore. Having brought our fishing gear along, we were soon drifting along with the breeze catching 4 to 5 inch perch. Nothing to write home about. A good way to past time until the evening shot started.
Removing my watch from my pocket, I noticed that it was now 5:30 p.m. I suggested to Don that we go head to shore for supper. Don was in agreement and the canoe was soon beached ashore. Grabbing our lunch bags we sat along the shore and ate supper. The bug population has been dramatically reduced so it was a pleasure to sit on the rocks in the shade looking over the lake before us. Having finished eating, Don stretched out for a nap and I commenced to explore the shoreline. As I entered a small cove a small stream appeared ahead of me. Upon approach it, I noticed how clear the water was as it entered the lake. Kneeling down I ran my hand into the water. It was quite cool feeling specially for this time of year. I called Don over and he suggested we backtrack the stream to its source. So off we went walking on higher ground as the stream was in dense vegetation. As we made our way with the stream to our left, an opening appeared ahead of us. Don and I made our way down the sloping ground to the woods edge. We emerged upon a small bog pond surrounded by lush vegetation and tiny white flowers.
I quickly returned to my canoe to gather up my camera equipment. Reappearing at the pond’s edge, the camera and tripod in hand I made a quick survey of my surroundings. With the sun settling to the west, I decided to move around the pond to my left to eliminate sun glare on the camera lens. Now this pond was dominated by the various shades of green. I was cast in shadow around me which would also effect my foreground.I felt this would add to the depth of the photo. I also thought that the best way to portray this scene was by doing a panoramic to capture the sense of the mood. That it was quiet and peacefulness. There was also a feeling of serene beauty about this location. Like an oasis in the woods. With the lush vegetation and clear waters, I was of the impression that this was a spring fed pond. As I walked along the pond edge I had the feeling of walking on air. The vegetation underfoot was holding me up. I had to remain completely still to allow everything to settle down. I have my camera set to 2 sec. after the push of the shutter button. Thus helping to eliminate vibration. Completing my series of shots I took one last look at this little oasis in the woods and hiked back to Bassfin Lake. I believe that I will return here in the near future.

My daughter Maryjean and I spent last Sunday evening canoeing Bassfin Lake, off the Matagamasi Lake Road. She fished and I photographed. The bugs were there, thus requiring a bug jacket. The wind was here and there. Never totally calming down. I was dropped off on the largest island on the lake. As I walked the shoreline, I spotted this reddish colored rock in the shallow waters. It was ringed with Pine pollen. It has a face effect to it. The blue water gave me good contrast with the reddish rock. You can just observe the lake bottom on the left side of the photo. I utilized the water vegetation to create the odd number of objects.
It was a nice evening canoeing and photographing. It was a fitting way to finish off Father’ Day with my daughter enjoying a couple hours outdoors. I am off to Lake Superior Provincial Park for a week of photographing. So until next time, happy trails
One of my favorite lakes last year was Bassfin Lake on Matagamasi Lake Road. This lake has unique rock structures along its shoreline that makes for great photographing. The rock formations are quite colorful in that you have pink and a very strong reddish color. If you wait until dusk that reddish color really stands out. The above photo was taken in a back bay on the West end of the Bassfin Lake. The wind had now calmed down with the approach of dusk.
I was situated on a small rock island. I set the tripod up low to the ground. The reason for this was to eliminate the expanse of water before me. I wanted to show the detail of the rock in front of me. The angle of this rock drops from top to bottom. By doing this I am able to tie in the composition with the reflections on the water. There is a bit of sparse vegetation to break up the rock color. The other thing is the beautiful rusty red colored rock that makes this unique. There is just enough sky to give a hint of dusk. So with my Canon 7D, I captured this lovely composition.
I live in a country of rock, trees and water. It is just wonderful to be a part of it and to be able to capture these special moments. While that is it for now. Thank you for stopping by. My hope is that I can give you peace of mind when you observe my work. So until next time happy trails.
This is a photo that I composed when Maureen and I spent a wonderful evening canoeing on Bassfin Lake. We were paddling out of a secluded bay through a narrow channel leading to the main lake. The bright red coloring of the rocks caught my attention here. I motioned to Maureen that we would pull up to the red colored island. Gathering my camera equipment I was soon set up and composing my shot. The sun was below the horizon now. The water surface like a mirror. Mother Nature was at her best in providing cool geometric shapes created by the reflections. There was a touch of clouds in the background to offset the blue sky. A perfect ending for a lovely evening spent with my wife in a back bay isolated from everything but nature.

Riding on a Greyhound bus
On a North bound highway

To seek a job down South

The above photo was an evening capture up the Matagamasi Road. The lake is Bushy Lake. I had been photographing at Bassfin Lake and decided to take a quick run up to Bushy Lake. There I was greeted by the above scene. Beautiful sky and reflections. I used the left shoreline to lead out to to background. The reflections were great with some amazing cloud detail. This is again being in the right pace at the right time.

My wife Maureen had a day off last Wednesday, so I suggested that we load the canoe and head for Bassfin Lake up the Matagamasi Lake Road. I had photographed along the lake by the road many times. I wanted to find out what else the lake had to offer. With that decided we packed a lunch and headed out. This is a short trip from Sudbury to the lake. We quickly loaded our Quebecor 17 canoe and pushed off. It was a wonderful afternoon. Bright blue skies and warm temperatures. The wind was light.
Maureen and I paddled across the lake and turned into a small channel that opened onto a bay. This is one of those locations were you enter a new world and mysteries. The rock structures were unique. There was a lot of detail in the rock faces. We paddled to the end of the bay. I located a spot to land the canoe. Quickly unloading, we walked up an exposed rock formation that slanted towards the interior of the surrounding landscape. Where I was set up I was overlooking the bay from a height advantage.
By now it was late afternoon. I set up my tripod in a favorable location and waited. This was like sitting in your own little world. No other people around. A beautiful sight before you. I sat their just watching the play of light among the trees. This is a good way to become knowledgeable in the ways of lighting in a wilderness setting. The wind was dancing lightly here and there before setting down. It was not long before the reflections began to appear. I took a number of photos as time progressed. The above photo is the last one I shot where there was just a bit of lighting striking the tree tops in the background. You can also see a sprinkling of light to the left. The sun was setting to my left.

Yesterday morning I got busy and made a nice pot of soup, then finished off a poem I was working on. I then made a stew in the oven for supper. With all that out of the way I headed up to Bassfin Lake on the Matagamasi Lake Road for an evening of photographing. Upon arrival things did not look too good. There was some wind blowing across the lake. Some heavy cloud cover was coming in from the West. This is one of these lakes that has a lot of structure in the form of rocky shoreline. The water level here is low. Exposing the shoreline. There is tremendous color to be had here. So I waited. The wind slowly died down and I was able to get into some photographing. This lasted about half an hour before the wind came again.
I had set up my tripod very low in order to eliminate some water in the middle ground. Using the point of land as my foreground and the gorgeous detail and color to boot. I just used enough Pine trees on the left for a frame. There is a rocky island in the middle. In the background there is a quartz like rock on the far shoreline to draw your eye back there. There is just a hint of Fall color to be seen in the surrounding forest. The clouds had moved in by now. I was able to get some nice yellow in the sky plus some yellow reflections on the water.

During an evening shoot at Bassfin Lake, I had an opportunity to capture the above scene. This consisted of a rocky island with stunted trees on it. The problem here was that the island bound trees under normal lighting would blend into the tree covered shoreline behind it. As the evening sun lowered to the horizon, the trees on the island lit up beautifully. There was now the separation that I was looking for. The sky became an orange color that also highlighted the trees. There is quite a bit of detail on the rocks themselves. There is a very nice touch of lighting highlighting trees in the middle ground. The angle of the sun in relationship to the island made this composition possible. It is all about the lighting.
