Spring Thaw

A freshening south wind

Caresses the frozen land

A bright and sunny day

The warmth of spring

Blankets the snow bound terrain

The spring thaw has begun

A river flows beneath

The burden of winter

The snow laden evergreens

Line the river’s edge

 

 

The relentless winter winds

Has turned the exposed snow

Into sculptured forms of art

The smooth crust of snow

Formed into humps and valleys

Where the shadows play

Embellishing the exposed snow

The river has burst forth

From its winter blanket

Surging water slowly appears

Creating pools of tea colored water

To disappear once again

Beneath the melting ice

To reappear downriver

Charging on in the

Warmth of spring

 

 

With the sun dropping

Below the distant tree line

There is a chill

In the spring air

Long shadows are cast

With a hint of blue

Upon the stark white land

Interspersed with exposed rocks

The approach of evening

Heralds the end of the day

With a display of subdued lighting

What a beautiful day this past Sunday. Plus 6 C and lots of sun. I spent a late afternoon and evening exploring High Falls looking for possible compositions. The above capture was the last photo I took that evening. The shapes and patterns of the snow and ice are very interesting. My goal here was to put all theses forms into a composition. When you look at the sculptured snow and ice you can see a tremendous amount of detail. On the snow on the left you can see scoured lines leading down and towards the middle of the scenes. I placed a bit of water in the left bottom to give some color contrast. There are remarkable amount of detail along the waters edge. By placing the right hand curved piece in the foreground I accomplished more depth to the scene.

Brilliance Of Color

Late evening of a warm summer day

The sky is cloudless

The sun is low

Somewhere  on a Northern river

The river runs low

The water is pure

The boulders turn chromatic

The scene becomes dramatic

The slow moving water

Is saturated with color

A reflection of gold

With a splashing of blue

The surrounding rocks

Glowing from the diffusion

Of the surrounding colors

Creating a spell-bounding scene

The evening light is fading

The brilliance of color

Lost in the shadows

Of the oncoming night

The composition above is a dramatic micro scene that can be found in and around waterfalls.

You have to look close to find them.

They are  something to behold.

More so when you have it up on your computer screen

Keep a sharp eye out.

On Saturday May 11, I will be at the Rubber Boots Festival in Noelville , Ontario.

I will be set up from 12:00 to 6:00 in the arena with my photographic works

Shadows

I have been ask if the water is always dark and lots of shadows where I photograph.The great majority of my work is done along rivers and creeks.The rivers are usually flowing between hills with a lot of tree growth.A majority of my photographic work takes place in wilderness areas and the tree growth is mature.

Depending on the time of day,there is usually a lot of shadows created by hills and overhanging trees.The sun is usually starting to disappear behind the hills by three in the afternoon and starting to filter through the trees.I carry a compass with me and I can check to see were the sun rises and sets. This is important to determine whether you will get back lighting 0r cross lighting.

The shadows used in conjunction with the lighting can create some awesome photographs.Looking at the photo above,you can see the sun is cross lighting in the foreground and you have deep shadows in the background.The sun is on the right hand side of this photo.Using this to good effect you can create a mysterious turn into deeper woods and good depth of field.You will also notice that the sun is highlighting parts of the trees on the left breaking up the shadows.

The above photo was shot at 1/4 sec with the zoom set at 135 @ f22. You must always be patient and take many shots.This particular afternoon there was moving cloud cover.By watching the scene before me I was able to get many shots as the sun reappeared from behind the clouds By watching the light intensity I could get different effects and then choose the photo I thought gave me the best effects.So until next time watch your shadows and happy trails
