Late Evening Sunlight

A quiet stroll along the banks of the Aux Sauble River. The wind has died down. It is early evening. The sun is casting light through the tress on the left. A beautiful glow of yellow, green is illuminating the still waters. The tree trunks cast as black in the reflections on the water’s surface. The river narrows in the background. This is a place were you could sit on the river bank and just relaxed and enjoy the scenery. The shoreline is lined with Cedar and Pine trees.

The Oppurtunity

I was on the road for most of the day yesterday doing business. On my way home at about 2:30 that afternoon I crossed a bridge over a creek. Glancing up the creek I took note of the patterns I saw along the water’s edge. I decided to head home and get my camera. I live only a couple minutes away. Once at home I enjoyed a cup of coffee first before grabbing my camera bag and heading out the door.

Yesterday was a cloudy day with lovely lighting. On the left side of the creek the shoreline had an interesting spot that really caught my eye. There was grass exposed under the snow. The snow texture was great with some neat patterns to it. On top of that the water was calm, allowing for great reflection to add to the pattern. Shot by itself was not going to create a good composition. I set up my tripod and camera and shot the above scene as a vertical. I used the right shoreline as a lead-in and placed my main point of interest in the top right hand of the photo. Of interest was the outline of a face made by ice on the water. As I processed the photo a touch of magenta showed on the snow that I had to tone down. The city of Sudbury has a far number of lakes and streams within its boundaries. Sudbury is also noted for its Nature trails that can offer photographic opportunities.

Gordon Chutes

The photo above is the end of a series of waterfalls called Gordon Chutes. It is a fairly long series of fast water cascading down between rock formations. The Wakonasin River runs between steep hills as it makes its way South. The rock structure here is Granite for the most part. In low light it is a beautiful reddish color.

This composition was taken very late one evening. Thus the low shutter speed. I used a f-stop of f22 to maintain my depth of field. I put green vegetation in the foreground for depth. I was a bit elevated on the shoreline here.

Fast Water and Rocks

Colorful rocks and fast water make for some wonderful compositions. I purposely kept this shot tight. I just showed enough vegetation at the top to add color and a bit of framing. I chose a couple rocks for the foreground for added depth. Then I recorded different shutter speeds but left my f-stops at f22. At the pace of the water coming through here I need a shutter speed to stop the fast flowing water. This how you  can create what I call character with flowing water. You make the water come alive with power and movement. You want that water to be vibrant.

After you get home, upload your shots to the computer. Then it is just a matter of selecting the composition that turns you on and process it. I am a photo artist so my work for the most part does not look like a standard photograph.

Pink Lady’s Slipper

I am not much into photographing wildflowers. I do have a soft spot for Orchids. One such Orchid is the Pink Lady Slipper that is also known as the Moccasin Flower. They are found in mixed or coniferous forest that is moist and shady. I usually come across this Orchid  when I am hiking along trails in Killarney provincial Park  in June. To make the flower itself stand out I used a technique found in Scott Kelby‘s Adobe Photoshop CS6 book for digital photographers.

I started by processing the photo as I would normally do. Then I would flatten the layers and save the file as a Tiff. This allows me to go back into Camera Raw. Once in Camera Raw get the adjustment brush. Drag the exposure slider all the way to the left. The shadow slider can be dragged all the way to the left to made things even darker. I did not move the shadow slider as I still wanted to see some habitat. Click on the erase button. Set your brush size to what you want. In this case I wanted to show the flower.  Set the feather ( softness) to 90. Then click once over the area you want lit with a soft spotlight like you see in the above photo. You are revealing the image in that one spot by erasing the darkness.

Color in The Sky

A beautiful Fall evening. The sun is below the horizon. I had looked to the North side of O S A Lake and saw the beautiful colored sky that you see above. I set up my tripod and Canon 7D and composed the above shot. Scenes like this are always wonderful to see. The colors in the sky are fleeting, so you have to be fairly quick about getting these shots.

Well that is it for now. It is a rainy day here in my part of the country. Plus freezing rain and snow.

Making Use of Rock Structures

A short half hour canoe ride brings you to a stretch of fast water that has some interesting photo opportunities. The location is the Aux Sauble River North of Massey Ontario. This scene was interesting in that on the West side of the river was an unique rock structure. The face of the rock was smooth and dished from constant wear by water over countless years. There is a nice overhang of Pine branches on the far shoreline. I set up my tripod and my Canon 7D to use the rock structure on the right as my lead in to the composition.

Color Along The River

Last Fall Paul Smith and I were wandering along the Wakanasin River. Paul and I had looked at this scene many times but could not put it together. We looked at it during many seasons other than Winter. Up the Westbranch there is not a lot of Maple and Oak for the red and orange Fall colors. There is mostly Evergreens, Birch and Poplar in this part of the country.

I stepped out in the water to set up this composition. Having placed the tripod and camera I set about composing the above scene. There was cloud cover, which cut the glare of the sun on the running water. You can just make out some reflection, reddish orange on the right in the crystal clear water.

Mist and The Maple Tree

It was just after sunrise on the Vermillion River near my home. It was one of my many trips to the river to photograph. It was Fall and the colors were very nice. The mist was heavy that morning. I saw a maple tree across the river being lit up by the early morning sun. I proceeded to set up my tripod and Canon 7D. It was just a matter of waiting for the mist to thin out a bit. I managed to capture the above composition of the Maple Tree in all its Fall glory.

One Enchanting Evening

A beautiful enchanting even. The air is warm. Not a breath of wind is stirring. The moon has risen. The river is at peace. There is Fall colors in abundance. This is the scene that I came upon one evening last Fall on the Vermillion River. It is a wonderful experience to be part of nature when Mother Earth shows this side of her to you. To sit by the shoreline and absorb all this around you.
